The REgions project enables fluctuating renewable energies (RE) to contribute to the stability of the energy system at several levels: at regional, interregional and European markets for ancillary services. Due to their connection to usually lower voltage levels, RE can contribute to the stabilisation of the regional grid if they are intelligently coordinated via virtual power plants (VPP). In addition, RE-VPP can also contribute to the stability of higher-level grids, for example by collateralising the provision of balancing reserve in the event of grid congestions or by executing an antimetric REdispatch on both sides of the congestion. In REgions, Fraunhofer IEE’s VPP Energy Connect has been enabled to offer regional as well as interregional ancillary services. For this purpose, appropriate markets were designed and possible interactions and framework conditions were derived.
