Power converter development

Device and component development

© Fraunhofer IEE

Thanks to numerous innovative research and industrial projects, we at Fraunhofer IEE have in-depth expertise in the development of highly efficient power converters. With our expertise in the application of novel SiC and GaN power semiconductors, we can provide you with targeted support in the development of compact and efficient converters. On request, we can support you throughout the entire development process, from topology analysis and comprehensive simulations through to development and commissioning. An excerpt from successfully completed projects includes the development of the following components

  • Grid-forming battery inverters
  • Photovoltaic inverters
  • Rectifiers for electrolysis systems
  • Medium-voltage converters
  • Uninterruptible power supply (UPS)
  • Multilevel power converters
  • Bidirectional charging technology for electric vehicles

We develop power converters in variable power classes ranging from less than 100 watts to the megawatt range. By using patented control concepts developed in-house, we are able to combine power converters with high power and high switching frequency, thereby minimizing costs and installation space. We also have expertise in innovative switching concepts and switching relief topologies, which we can use for the development of soft-switching current converters.

Electronics laboratory for research on innovative power converters

In the various research and industrial projects, the construction and commissioning of newly developed prototypes of power converters is essential for achieving the ambitious research goals. In the electronics laboratory, efficient and compact devices together with the installed circuit boards are developed, assembled and commissioned in accordance with the requirements of the projects. Magnetic components from research partners are also installed and tested in the power converters.

Altium Designer is used in conjunction with Fusion 360 to design the PCBs and integrate them into the power converters.

Medium-voltage laboratory

For tests on power converters with high power and high operating voltage, we can utilize the infrastructure of the medium-voltage laboratory. The battery and gas laboratories are linked for combined tests of power converters and batteries or fuel cells.
